Broccoli memecoins surge after Binance founder's reveal

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as "CZ," disclosed the name of his dog, Broccoli, sparking a sudden surge in memecoins inspired by the Belgian Malinois.

Following the revelation, a multitude of Broccoli-themed tokens emerged on memecoin platforms such as Solana 's Pump.fun, boasting at least 480 variations, and BNB Smart Chain's Four.Meme, showcasing at least 300.

One such token on the Solana network achieved a staggering $1.5 billion market capitalization on February 13, the same day the dog's name was made public.

Despite the frenzy, CZ has clarified that he has no plans to launch a memecoin himself, leaving the initiative to the community's discretion. This news comes amid a broader context of memecoin controversies, including the recent launch of memecoins by former US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in January, which was followed by a series of scamcoins exploiting their names.

PancakeSwap, a decentralized exchange on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC), has capitalized on the memecoin trend, recording a remarkable $3 billion in trading volume within the past 24 hours, as reported by DefiLlama. This surge has propelled PancakeSwap to the forefront of decentralized exchanges, surpassing competitors like Uniswap and Raydium.

The BNB Chain, previously known as Binance Smart Chain, has also shown a keen interest in the memecoin market. In its 2025 roadmap, the BNB Chain team highlighted their ongoing support for the meme ecosystem and their collaboration with meme tool providers. This enthusiasm possibly contributed to the BNB token's price increase to $724.70 earlier on February 13.

In a practical demonstration, the BNB Chain team created a test memecoin on Four.Meme as part of a tutorial, inadvertently fueling speculative trading that drove its market value into the millions. However, traders are urged to exercise caution with memecoins due to the risk of scams, including developer-initiated rug pulls that can lead to rapid and significant losses.
